GENERAL

Biography

Dr. Jorge Luis Fuentes Lorenzo is an outstanding Microbiologist with a solid academic background. He obtained his Master’s degree in Plant Biology with a mention in Plant Biotechnology and his PhD in Agricultural Sciences, specialized in Plant Molecular Genetics, both degrees obtained at the prestigious University of Havana in Cuba.

His career began in 1991 at the Center for Technological Applications and Nuclear Development (CEADEN) in Havana, Cuba, where he worked until the end of 2005. During his time at this institution, his research focused mainly on the areas of Mutagenesis and Radioprotection.

Between 2001 and 2005, Dr. Fuentes held the position of Head of the Radiobiology Department at CEADEN. His work during this period was largely supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and he received awards from both the Cuban Nuclear Energy Agency and the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Fuentes is currently a Professor and Senior Researcher at the School of Biology of the Universidad Industrial de Santander in Bucaramanga, Colombia. He is also the director of the Microbiology and Genetics Research Group (COL0083849). His outstanding academic work has also led him to be a corresponding member of the Colombian Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences, as well as of the Colombian Association of Biological Sciences.

The professor has extensive and successful research experience, having participated in 29 projects in the areas of Biotechnology, Microbiology, Mutagenesis, and Photoprotection. His academic achievements include the publication of 75 scientific papers in international and national journals, as well as the presentation of 73 papers in scientific events. In addition, he has directed 48 undergraduate projects and 14 graduate projects, demonstrating his commitment to the training and development of new talent in the field of science.
