GENERAL

Biography

Professor Sergio Andrés Marchant Rojas’s research profile encompasses a variety of studies aimed at understanding biodiversity, adaptation, and conservation strategies through the integration of genetic analysis, ecological research, and biogeographic explorations. These research areas are crucial for comprehending and addressing the challenges faced by ecosystems and species in the face of environmental changes and human activities.

In his research, Professor Marchant has focused on developing genomic markers to unravel information about the genetic diversity and conservation strategies of various organisms. For instance, he has developed genome-derived microsatellite markers to study genetic diversity and conservation strategies in plants such as Lippia origanoides, marine isopods like Excirolana hirsuticauda and Limnoria sp., and abalones. These markers have played a fundamental role in understanding patterns of genetic diversity and unraveling the specific status of species, resolving ambiguous morphologies, thus enriching the understanding of marine biodiversity.

Additionally, he has conducted research on the diversity, agriculture, and conservation of nematodes, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices and conservation efforts aimed at preserving crop health and local ecosystems.

Another area of his research has focused on biogeography, thermal adaptation, and distribution patterns of marine organisms, particularly the goose barnacle Pollicipes elegans. Through this work, he has unraveled the origins of disjunct distribution patterns and investigated the thermal tolerance of this species and other barnacle species with antitropical distributions. These studies have provided insights into species adaptation across climatic zones and their potential responses to climate change.

Through these interdisciplinary efforts, Professor Marchant’s research aims to bridge the gap between genetics, ecology, and conservation. By deciphering genetic diversity, adaptation mechanisms, and distribution patterns of various organisms, his work contributes to informed conservation strategies and sustainable management practices in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This is crucial for preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecosystem functioning in the face of ongoing environmental changes. His research in biodiversity, adaptation, and conservation spans a wide range of studies that integrate genetic analysis, ecological research, and biogeographic explorations.

By focusing on the development of genomic markers, species diversity, and biogeography, his work contributes to the understanding of genetic diversity, adaptation mechanisms, and distribution patterns of various organisms. This knowledge is essential for the development of informed conservation strategies and sustainable management practices in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
