GENERAL

Biography

Professor Helwar Hernando Figueroa Salamanca holds a Doctorate in Latin American Studies from the University of Toulouse Le-Mirail and a Master’s degree in History from the same university. He completed his postdoctoral studies at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana. He is a historian from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and a full professor at the Universidad Industrial de Santander, where he has served as the director of the Yearbook of Regional History and Borders and the Director of Research for the Faculty of Human Sciences. Currently, he is a professor in the School of History at the Universidad Industrial de Santander, teaching courses on 20th Century Colombian History, Social Movements and Gender, Memories, Territory, and Conflict in Colombia, and Film and History.

His historical research focuses on the social history of power and culture. He has publications in the fields of the history of education in Colombia, religious events and their relationships with politics and violence. His recent research and supervision of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral theses have focused on the study of mid-20th century violence, displacement associated with Colombia’s internal conflict, and its impact on Colombian culture. Particularly, with an emphasis on understanding the role of memory and territory as identity devices. His studies have been published in various academic journals and books.
