GENERAL

Biography

William Fernando Hidalgo Bucheli is a Chemistry graduate from the Universidad de Nariño. He holds a Master’s degree in Biotechnology from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Medellín campus) and a Doctorate in Natural Sciences with an emphasis on Ecological Chemistry from the Friedrich Schiller University – Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology (Jena, Germany).

He has served as the principal investigator in several research projects primarily focused on the study of plant chemical defense mechanisms, particularly in the biological system of Musa-Mycosphaerella fijiensis (the causative agent of Black Sigatoka disease in banana plants). His research also encompasses the biosynthesis of natural products and studies in metabolomics based on mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (mono- and bidimensional) aimed at elucidating the mechanisms of action of essential oils on clinically relevant pathogenic microorganisms.

He is the author and co-author of eleven scientific articles published in high-impact international journals, such as Plant, Cell and Environment, Phytochemistry, Journal of Organic Chemistry, Plant Pathology, and Antibiotics. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemistry at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and a research member of the CODEIM research group (Organic Compounds of Medicinal Interest – Category A1, MinCiencias) and the GIBIM research group (Research Group in Biochemistry and Microbiology – Category A1, MinCiencias), where he leads the research line in Metabolomics.

He is the director of four ongoing research projects focused on the application of metabolomics as a tool to explore the biological potential of natural products (and synthetic derivatives) in inhibiting the growth and development of clinically and agriculturally relevant microorganisms. He is the primary supervisor of ten UIS Chemistry students (six undergraduates, three Master’s, and one doctoral) involved in the ongoing research projects.
