Throughout his career, Dr. Bautista has developed a line of research focused on the study of human factors in the use of extended reality (XR) technologies, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). His doctoral research delves into the analysis of cognitive load and user performance during learning and training tasks in immersive environments, aiming to understand how variables such as spatial contiguity, information representation, and interaction design influence the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process.

He has proposed methodological models to evaluate and optimize the design of immersive educational experiences, integrating principles of cognitive multimedia design, task-based instructional design (such as the 4C/ID model), and user experience (UX) best practices. His approach combines the methodological rigor of computer science with the design sensitivity of industrial design, aiming to generate innovative solutions that promote meaningful learning, reduce mental overload, and enhance technological accessibility.

In his role as professor and researcher at the School of Industrial Design at Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), Dr. Bautista has led interdisciplinary projects in collaboration with professionals from fields such as biomedical engineering, cognitive psychology, and education. He has served as advisor for undergraduate and graduate theses, presented at national and international academic events, and authored scientific publications on interface design, usability evaluation, and immersive educational technologies.

His work contributes to the consolidation of an emerging field in Latin America: the ethical, inclusive, and scientifically grounded use of XR technologies for the development of human capacities in contexts such as education, healthcare, and professional training. With a critical and forward-looking perspective, Dr. Bautista promotes a research agenda oriented toward the design of human-centered technologies capable of addressing users’ cognitive, emotional, and social needs.
